Understanding the Connection Between Adolescent Mental Health and Substance Use Adolescence is a critical period for mental health, emotional development, and early intervention. Understanding how mental health conditions and substance use intersect during these years remains an important area of behavioral health research, yet research on effective interventions for adolescents experiencing both challenges remains limited. A new national initiative led by the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) aims to address this gap by training researchers and advancing knowledge of treatment approaches for young people.
During adolescence, the brain continues to develop, including areas involved in decision-making and impulse control. Substance use during this period can pose risks to healthy development, while mental health conditions and substance use disorders can influence one another and make treatment more complex. This overlap highlights the importance of understanding how to best support adolescents experiencing both challenges.
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) 2025 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, approximately 5 million U.S. adolescents ages 12–17 experienced either a major depressive episode or a substance use disorder in the past year. Of these, an estimated 604,000 experienced both a major depressive episode and a substance use disorder.
To help address gaps in research, MUSC is leading a five-year initiative supported by more than $7.5 million in federal funding. The program supports six physician-researchers through specialized training and mentorship, preparing them to conduct independent research into adolescent mental health and substance use. By developing researchers and expanding the evidence available to guide treatment, the initiative aims to improve understanding of how to care for young people experiencing these co-occurring conditions.
